Frances Sullinger

Frances Sullinger's membership at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna, Virginia, led to her involvement in Listening Hearts Ministries. When Listening Hearts was looking for churches to field test its recently developed process for training discerners, Frances was in the group at Holy Comforter selected to participate in and evaluate the training program. She has maintained her relationship with the organization ever since and has served for several years on both the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee. She leads retreats, trains discerners and serves on the program and marketing committees.

Frances earned BS and MS degrees in theatre, speech and English from Texas A&M at Commerce. Having grown up in the Southern Baptist tradition, she and husband Ted were confirmed in the Episcopal Church shortly after their marriage. She completed one year of PhD work in structural linguistics at Denver University. Her academic career spanned Florida, Texas, Colorado, West Virginia, and the overseas Division of the University of Maryland including Europe and Africa. Her daughter, Clare, was born in Greece, where the family lived until Frances joined the U.S. Foreign Service as a Public Diplomacy officer. She served in Korea; Washington DC, where husband Ted died in 1987; Colombia, and Costa Rica before retiring from the Department of State in 2000.

She resides in Northern Virginia near her daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren and continues at Holy Comforter, where she mentors the Education for Ministry (EFM) course from the University of the South.
