Helping Individuals and Groups to Hear God's Call
Dis*cern (verb)1. To identify
2. To recognize or to comprehend
3. To perceive as being different; to distinguish
Imagine the church alive with the practice of spiritual discernment. Envision your community of faith vibrant with people seeking God's guidance with open hearts and minds. We, as the body of Christ here in this world, can become a people learning, teaching, and living such a vision. This is the aim of Listening Hearts Ministries.
Listening to one another with reverence, waiting with patience for the Spirit to show the way, observing signs of God at work. All are simple and natural spiritual disciplines. Yet we need to recover them, because our culture has led us away from them. Discernment training helps us to find the still point at the center of our being so that our actions as individuals and communities may spring forth in a right relationship with God and with one another.
Spiritual Discernment
For centuries, discernment has been embedded in major spiritual movements. To most contemporary Christians, however, it has seemed inaccessible. The bulk of discernment literature has been written by and for the spiritually precocious. Listening Hearts Ministries has developed a rich variety of methods by which almost any adult who wants to can learn to practice discernment.
Since its formation in 1989, Listening Hearts Ministries has become recognized across the country for its work in making the concept of spiritual discernment understandable and accessible. Our workshops help people open their hearts and minds - their whole selves - to the guiding presence of God through prayerful listening, imaginative engagement with Scripture, and careful attention to signs of the Spirit. The name Listening Hearts Ministries is based on the Judeo-Christian concept of the "heart" as the essential core of the person; it is where the Spirit of God is found.
Our Mission Statement
Listening Hearts Ministries provides a range of programs, publications, and services that teach people the practice of spiritual discernment through prayerful listening in supportive communities.
